Airports: V.C. Bird International is the only airport in Antigua, named after the country's long-serving Prime Minister. The Antiguan airport is located on the northeast coast of the island, just a few kilometers from the capital city of St. John's. Several airlines fly into the Antiguan airport on a regular basis, connecting the island with much of Europe and North America. V.C. Bird International receives Virgin Atlantic and British Airways flights from London Gatwick four times per week. American Airlines, Air Jamaica and Air Canada also offer regular flights to the island. Journey times vary, but travelers from UK/Europe can expect flights of approximately 9 hours, with flights from North America taking about 4 hours. Transport: Antiguans drive on the left, which makes for a simple life if you are a UK resident! Car rentals average £25-£35 (US$40-$50) per day, depending on the season and model of car. The driver must pay a small additional fee (approx £16) for a temporary Antigua permit, a necessity - along with your license from home - to book Antigua car rentals. These can be purchased at any agency and are valid for three months. Both international and local agencies offer Antigua car rentals. Avis, Hertz, and Budget have their Antigua car rentals stationed at the airport, while Dollar operates a kiosk out of St. John's. These larger companies generally include airport pick-up and other additional services along with your Antigua car rental's reservation. Before booking your Antigua car rentals with a smaller local company, it is advisable to check with a travel agent or seasoned Antigua traveler, as reliability can sometimes be 'variable'... |
